| Abstract: |
| A sodium hydroxide roasting process for upgrading titania slag product of ilmenite to a high grade titanium dioxide (TiO2) is presented. The roasting process was carried out at moderate to high temperatures to yield a reaction product that would be easily decomposed by subsequent leaching procedures. Factors affecting the roasting process; namely sodium hydroxide the ratio to the slag material, the roasting time and temperature were studied. The optimised conditions used a NaOH to theory quantitative of aluminium and silicon contents in the slag ratio of 4.5 at a roasting temperature of 900 ?C for 1 h duration period. The impurities associated with the roasted slag were subjected to leaching with water at a pulp ratio (S/L) of 1:1for 1 h and 18% HCl solution at a leaching temperature 90?C and at a pulp ratio (S/L) of 4:1for 4 h leaving synthetic rutile (TiO2) as insoluble residue. Residue roasting was carried out at a temperature of 900 ?C for 1 h.This method is capable of producing high purity synthetic rutile assaying about 92% TiO2. |
