| Abstract: |
| The latest progress on the production of ferronickel alloy by electric furnace reduction from laterite was tentatively reviewed in a thought provoking way, the discussions centered on the mechanisms for ferronickel production, technology difficulty and development direction. Results show that reduction order for oxides in laterite is that NiO> NiFe2O4> Fe2O3> SiO2>MgO. Slag and matte could be separated easily while great density exists between slag and matte, also has good fluidity, which is beneficial for the direct recovery of nickel to increase while SiO2/MgO at 1.6-2.8 and FeO content at 20%-30%. Slag type has large influence on sulfur take off from slag, it is beneficial for sulfur take off from slag when promote the alkalinity properly at a range of suitable alkalescency, but it is not beneficial for sulfur take off while at an excess alkalinity and big viscosity. Ferronickel production by electric furnace reduction has such merits that short process, ferronickel grade can be controlled easily and the direct recovery of nickel is high, but large work need to be done in practice just like intensify the metallurgy process, promote the efficiency of production and increase the content of nickel in ferronickel in future. |
