| Abstract: |
| The genus Alicyclobacillus spread widely in the thermal and acidic environment such as acidic beverages, mines, thermal springs and solfataric soils. This kind of bacteria is characterized by endospore-formation and thermo-acidophilic nature. Several studies show that the genus Alicyclobacillus can catabolize a variety of substrates, for example, it can growth heterotrophically by using organics and chemoautotrophically by oxidizing oxidize ferrous iron, elemental sulfur, and sulfide ore, some can also reduce ferric iron in the solution or in the precipitate such as goethite under the anoxic or microoxic condition, so the genus Alicyclobacillus has great potential for application in mineral bioleaching. But there are only a few reports of the extraction of metal from minerals using these bacteria. The studies of the isolation, physiological and biochemical characteristics and separation method of the genus Alicyclobacillus and their applied research in biohydrometallurgy were reviewed. The prospect of the genus Alicyclobacillus in biohydrometallurgy were also discussed. |
